Also known as vaginal candidiasis or a yeast infection, is a common fungal infection that affects the female genital area, particularly the vagina.

Vaginal thrush, also known as vaginal candidiasis or a yeast infection, is a common fungal infection that affects the vagina and surrounding genital area. It occurs when the yeast Candida—most often Candida albicans—overgrows and disrupts the natural balance of microorganisms in the vagina. Although uncomfortable, vaginal thrush is not considered a sexually transmitted infection and can occur at any age.

Information

Vaginal thrush develops when the natural environment of the vagina changes in a way that allows yeast to multiply. Many women will experience thrush at least once in their lives, and while some infections cause noticeable symptoms, others may be mild or symptom free.

Common Triggers

Several factors can increase the risk of developing vaginal thrush:

  • Hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy, around menstruation, or from hormone-based contraceptives
  • Antibiotic use, which can disrupt the balance of healthy vaginal bacteria
  • Weakened immune system, including conditions like HIV or the use of immunosuppressive medications
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, which can promote yeast growth
  • Use of harsh soaps, scented products, or vaginal douching, which disrupt the natural vaginal environment
  • Tight or non-breathable clothing, creating warm, moist conditions where yeast thrives

If symptoms are persistent, recurrent, or severe, medical evaluation is recommended to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.

Symptoms

Symptoms of vaginal thrush can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Vaginal itching or irritation, often intense
  • Thick, white vaginal discharge resembling cottage cheese, typically odorless
  • Burning sensation, especially during urination or sexual intercourse
  • Redness and swelling of the vulva
  • Soreness or tenderness of the vaginal and vulvar tissues
