A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria enter and multiply within any part of the urinary system, including the bladder, urethra, ureters, or kidneys. Cystitis specifically refers to inflammation or infection of the bladder, often caused by bacteria such as Escherichia coli. Both conditions are common, particularly in women, and can lead to discomfort and urinary symptoms.

About UTIs

UTIs can affect different areas of the urinary tract. While some infections are mild and affect only the bladder, others can travel upward and cause more serious kidney infections. Not everyone with a UTI will have noticeable symptoms.

Symptoms of a UTI

When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Persistent urge to urinate
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Frequent urination, often with small amounts of urine
  • Cloudy urine
  • Urine that is pink, red, or brown, which may indicate blood
  • Strong, unpleasant odor in the urine
  • Pelvic pain, especially in women, centred around the lower abdomen or pubic area

UTIs can present differently in children:

  • New episodes of daytime wetting
  • Irritability or unexplained fever
  • Reduced feeding or fussiness in very young children

(Nighttime bed-wetting alone is not usually caused by a UTI.)

Symptoms of Cystitis

Cystitis, a type of UTI affecting the bladder, often produces similar but more localized symptoms:

  • Strong and ongoing urge to urinate
  • Pain or burning with urination
  • Frequent, small amounts of urine
  • Blood in the urine (haematuria)
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic discomfort or pressure below the belly button
  • Low-grade fever

Notes

Most bladder infections are mild and respond well to treatment, which may include increased hydration, pain relief, and—in bacterial cases—antibiotics. Prompt evaluation is important if symptoms worsen, if fever develops, or if there is concern for a kidney infection (which may include back pain, chills, or vomiting). Seeking medical advice is especially important for pregnant individuals, children, or those with recurrent UTIs.
