Medically known as sinusitis, is an inflammation or infection of the sinus cavities, which are hollow air-filled spaces located in the bones of the face around the nose.

Sinusitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or, less commonly, fungi, and it can lead to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms.

It's important to note that the duration and severity of sinus infection symptoms can vary. Acute sinusitis typically lasts a few weeks and is often related to a cold or upper respiratory infection. Chronic sinusitis, on the other hand, can persist for 12 weeks or more.

Treatment for sinusitis may include rest, over-the-counter or prescription medications to relieve symptoms, antibiotics if a bacterial infection is diagnosed, and in some cases, nasal sprays or decongestants to help reduce congestion. If you suspect you have a sinus infection, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Common symptoms of a sinus infection include:

  1. Nasal Congestion: A stuffy or blocked nose is a hallmark symptom of sinusitis. It can make it difficult to breathe through your nose.
  2. Sinus Pressure: You may experience pressure and pain in the face, particularly around the forehead, cheeks, and the area between the eyes. This discomfort is often referred to as "sinus headache."
  3. Facial Pain: Pain and tenderness in the face can be concentrated around the affected sinuses.
  4. Runny or Discolored Nasal Discharge: Sinus infections often produce thick, yellow or greenish mucus, and it may drain from the nose or down the throat.
  5. Cough: A persistent cough, which may be worse at night, can result from postnasal drip – when mucus from the sinuses drips down the back of the throat.
  6. Reduced Sense of Smell and Taste: Sinusitis can affect your ability to smell and taste things.
  7. Sore Throat: A sore throat can occur, especially if postnasal drip irritates the throat.
  8. Fever: In the case of a bacterial sinus infection, you might have a low-grade fever.
