Medically known as sinusitis, is an inflammation or infection of the sinus cavities, which are hollow air-filled spaces located in the bones of the face around the nose.
Sinusitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or, less commonly, fungi, and it can lead to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms.
It's important to note that the duration and severity of sinus infection symptoms can vary. Acute sinusitis typically lasts a few weeks and is often related to a cold or upper respiratory infection. Chronic sinusitis, on the other hand, can persist for 12 weeks or more.
Treatment for sinusitis may include rest, over-the-counter or prescription medications to relieve symptoms, antibiotics if a bacterial infection is diagnosed, and in some cases, nasal sprays or decongestants to help reduce congestion. If you suspect you have a sinus infection, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Common symptoms of a sinus infection include:
- Nasal Congestion: A stuffy or blocked nose is a hallmark symptom of sinusitis. It can make it difficult to breathe through your nose.
- Sinus Pressure: You may experience pressure and pain in the face, particularly around the forehead, cheeks, and the area between the eyes. This discomfort is often referred to as "sinus headache."
- Facial Pain: Pain and tenderness in the face can be concentrated around the affected sinuses.
- Runny or Discolored Nasal Discharge: Sinus infections often produce thick, yellow or greenish mucus, and it may drain from the nose or down the throat.
- Cough: A persistent cough, which may be worse at night, can result from postnasal drip – when mucus from the sinuses drips down the back of the throat.
- Reduced Sense of Smell and Taste: Sinusitis can affect your ability to smell and taste things.
- Sore Throat: A sore throat can occur, especially if postnasal drip irritates the throat.
- Fever: In the case of a bacterial sinus infection, you might have a low-grade fever.
